#3 PEARL EASTER CONFERENCE 1994 #1 By Dvize / Kronical The Pearl Easter Conference '94 (appropriately named Uncle Beavers Summer Camp!) took place in Adelaide on the 2nd and 3rd of April, of the year 1994. It ended a long drought of Australian scene parties and got the Aussie scene excited at the prospect of entering their work into a compo and meeting some of the Aussie scenes more famous members. However, expectations were never achieved and turned what could have been a great scene party, into a dull and controversial 24 hours. Before I continue with this report it should be said that Pearl had guts to try and hold such a party. They made a brave attempt and in my view, they're ideas for the party seemed quite good, if only they had attempted to get them going. Groups present at the party were... Pearl (ofcoz!) Frontier Digital Access Kronical Alchemy Spectre Resistance The Fun Factory (80 - 90 in attendance!) * NOTE * As you can see, the attendance may not be much to European standards, but in Australia, with a scene as small as ours, it was a considerably big turn out, especially from interstate party goers. #2THE PARTY PLACE :. #1 The party place was cool. It was (as Pearl said in their invite!) close to everything. Less than 5 minutes walk to the heart of the city. The hall was big enough to cater for the people in attendance, plus a few more. Table and chairs were in abundance and there were enough power points to go around. There was a large projector for the watching of cool demos all night. It was nice to see some effects on a large scale. 4 ft high vectors etc. look amazing! #2THE EVENTS :.#1 Ofcoz there was demo/music/gfx compos, but what about some other fun compos to keep the crowd happy? It was advertised in the PEARL invite that pool comps, disk throwing comps, video game comps, and on the spot music/gfx/intro comps MAY be held, but none of these happened. Fuck I got bored at times! #2THE VOTING :. #1 This is what fucked the party!!! Pearl was undecided on the voting system 5 minutes before the competitions began. Their decision turned out to be a bad one. It was decided, that after all the entries were shown/heard, the names would be read out and the voters put up their hands to which they liked the best. When people started voting for several tunes/pics, voting for themselves and forcing others to vote for certain people, most knew the compos were a joke! The music compo was worst in my view as it was difficult to remember tunez played first which gave them a disadvantage. The worst part of the music compo was that TINY/PEARL came 3rd by entering ELEKFUNK by MOBY/SANITY. He simply changed a few notes and samples and thought he could get away with it! LAMER! After hearing the first 2 or 3 patterns, I told them to stop the mod, got up and loaded Moby's tune up on my computer to show it was ripped. Everyone agreed, and no-one voted for him (he should have been kicked out of the compo!!!), yet, Pearl gave him 3rd place. Was his picture ripped too? I was extremely disappointed with Pearls lack of organisation at the party. It seemed that they forgot that people travelled for over 12 hours (DIGITAL ACCESS = 18 hours!) and spent a lot of money to support their party. They seemed to give up on trying to hold the party together and when they majority of the Pearl team left 6 hours before the official finished time it didn't give the attending people good impressions. Even the young unknown guys stuck around longer than the organisers!!! I was cool to meet people you know only from the phone and letters and to meet some new guys, which made it worth while for me to attend. But as a scene party, it was a joke. #2MESSAGES : #1 Pearl : Think twice before holding Uncle's Beaver again!!! Rabbi/Pearl : Thanks for being cool all night, for picking us up from the train station and for the lend of the monitor. Thanks for driving us to buy food and beer. (Not! hehe) Alchemist/Pearl : Cool that you made an effort to make the party a success. Deadlock/Kronical Mickey-D/Kronical Felon/Kronical : Thanks for the coolest train ride in history and for making the party worth-while. You know the deal! Digital Access : Nice demo guys. You guys are way cool!!! Keep in touch? Spectre : Thanks for livening up the place and for hospitality (Onslaught!) Tiny/Pearl (ex-TFF) : How did you think you could get away with it? Although Frontier's demo recieved the most votes, they were unable to claim the prize because it didn't work on that setup (it worked on an A1200 though). Pearl's demo, "Eclipse", was not finished in time for the comp. It will be released sometime in the future. Neither Spectre or Frontier released their demos at the party because they wanted to fix some bugs.
