INTERVIEW WITH LAVIATHON OF DELIRIUM


AXE/MST : Well oki this is AXE with some interview with THE BEST LIKED SYSOP voted in this issue of SCENE TALK ! Hi m8 please introduce yourself !

LAVIATH : Yo!  Well thanx for the interview..  This is laviathon sysop of End of the World BBS...

AXE/MST : Well tell us a little more about You, how old are you, where do you live...

LAVIATH : OK, well I am 26 years old (yeah old man in the scene! hehe) and I live in a small town in the state of wisconsin. The land of ice and snow, blah!

AXE/MST : Hehe so when did all started ? (I mean when did it start for YOU) what time did you entered the scene and how ? Did you had a bbs from the beginning or started as something else ? When did you heard about the so called SCENE ? Where you for example LEGAL ONLY in the past ?

LAVIATH : Hahaha.. Well I guess it all started in 1988 when I bought my first A500.  In the begining I was just trading games with a couple dudes where I lived.  Life was nice and simple but then I got a 2400 baud modem and met a sysop of an ELITE bbs.  He allowed me on his system and from that point, i was hooked.  Within a few short months I had an OLD 9600 HST and started calling a few LD bbs like Danse Macabre, The Martyrium, Hemispheres, Channel Zero, etc.  Well that lasted for about a year, satisfied enough to call around and get things for myself. Well later I figured out a way to call for free and started trading like hell. Was even voted #3 trader in a world charts (not bad for a USA dude, hehehe).  Relayer (sysop of terminal frost) and myself put up that bbs and ran it together. Well that was life until mid 92 when I decided to go back to the university to get my degree, since trading was no longer an option, EOTW was born.

AXE/MST : Well so where did you got your handle from ? Sounds kinda cool :) and well what way did you used for calling then... coz most people never thought of USA boys calling for free as they do from europe i guess...

LAVIATH : My handle came from the movie HELLRAISER II, Laviethan is how its normally spelled, But I just changed it a bit. I always though the name sounded cool myself. And as far as the calling for free. Well back in 1991-1992 there were quite a few 1-800 PBX's that one could use safely if you could get your hands on them. I mean a couple of them were being used by soo many dudes (mostly in the PC scene) that if they wanted to go after someone, they would have 1000's of dudes to choose from. hehe, i guess there is something to be said about SAFETY in numbers.

AXE/MST : Sure... well so did you started with multinode or with 1 node and build it up smoothly? Well i guess the germans where a big help for you to get the bbs running and fast or ? Did you noticed in the speed and the callers as bluebox became harder and is now hardly possible for most people.

LAVIATH : When I put up EOTW I started with 2 nodes, then a few months later I bought a used HST and added the 3rd. And thats where I am now.  The german dudes were a big help in the begining. Guys like Sargor and Andy/Spreadpoint, Subzero, etc. They helped with Ul'ing and inviting new users to the bbs. When BlueBox died i did notice for about a week a drop in calls, but since the BBS has ALWAYS been invite only, those guys found alternative ways to call, so I would say that BlueBox dieing hurt others probably more than myself.

AXE/MST : I see... So why did you open a board ? More contacts and less phone bill or just because you had no time for trading anymore ?

LAVIATH : The bbs opened for a few reasons. #1 I moved to go to school and did not have a way to trade or keep in contact with my friends any longer, so I guess the main reason was not wanting to say goodbye to the guys that I talked with. Another reason to open a BBS was that I had some extra hardware, figured a BBS was as good as anything to use it for.

AXE/MST : IBM... You got NO ibm on your bbs, do you think you will ever do ibm or will you stick to the amiga as long as it is there?

LAVIATH : IBM - The machine suxx. I hate using them, hehe...  But unfortunately the software support is amazing, so I understand why some guys are going that way. As far as EOTW goes, this bbs will never have a PC section.  #1 I am poor, hehe and can't afford the 8 nodes needed.  #2 It would ruin the amiga side of things. No amiga trader like to see some dude on the UL'r list ahead of them with 2 gigs cause they are trading CD ROMS, hehe... Nothing like looking in the PC confs and seeing disk ]24/56 . If I was going to go PC, i would put it on an entirely different computer.

AXE/MST : Well yes on amiga you can get all you want on IBM you need to LEECH 24 hours 7 days a week to get all the stuff... Well, and whats about CRACKING, is it pushing the amiga more and more down than anything else?

LAVIATH : I have strong feelings about this. Piracy may have something to do with the fewer and fewer titles for the amiga. My opinion is that there are too many pirates. Back when I started with my first modem, it was VERY difficult to even get on an ELITE bbs. Someone had to know you, and you had to prove yourself or you were GONE. As Blueboxing became widespread, modem prices fell, and then every lamer who had no chance to be in the scene before was now calling the states or setting up a BBS. Not only is it that there are alot more guys trying to trade and running BBS's, but they are also selling games for a few bux to dudes that have NO modems. It was not like that in the past...

AXE/MST : Yes things have changed quickly, whats about AGA or even CD-32 did you got one of those or thinking of buying one?

LAVIATH : The future of AMIGA is AGA, unfortunately my money situation does not allow me to buy one. But maybe in the future I will break down, sell some crap hardware and buy an A1200, hehehe...

AXE/MST : I see oki so whats the name of your girlfriend and her phone number? heheh

AXE/MST : Ohh... well is it Crawford or ? Send her as EXPRESS then !

LAVIATH : Hehehe, sure... I am out with Cindy Crawford a few days a week when I can pencil her in ya know.

AXE/MST : Well and then she noticed you are a SYSOP and left you again, or ? Thats life... hohoho...
Well whats your personal charts on FOOD, DRINK, MOVIE, GAME, DEMO, GROUP (ANOTHER ONE THAN THE ONES YOU ARE IN HOHO), /X TOOL?

LAVIATH :
FOOD - ITALIAN, love it!
DRINK - Beer is cool! but after the NEW YEARS parties, blah! Don't want to see one for awhile. hehe
MOVIE - Well, Waynes World II was funny. All time fave ALIENS.
GAME  - Super Empire Strikes back on SNES (sorry, it rulez!)
DEMO  - Hmmm, the old anarchy 3D demo still is my favorite, although I may
change my mind after I look at the entries from the party. Group - Tough one. I would say Fairlight is a group I really respect. steady through the years with no sign of stopping.
