MOTOROLA PARTYREPORT - ORGANIZERS VIEWPOINT - written by The Hooligan/DCS Well, what can I say. We wanted everything to be as good as possible, we invested money, time and a lot of effort to make this the best Amiga party ever. I don't know, nor I'm right person to say so, but in the end it's been a very good party indeed, except for some major fact...please read on... As stated in the invitationtext all the prizes were defined by a certain per cent, raising up everytime a new visitor paid the ticket. The party went on and on, and we watched the productions and all we had to say that the things looked very good indeed. Some state of the art demos would be released at MI98. Then a shock. We counted the prizemoney for each category. Oh fuck! The prizes were ridiculously low compared to the high standard of releases. Reason? There simply wasn't enough visitors! As little as 20-30 more people would have made a huge difference to the compoprizes. NOTE: ALL of the organizers WORKED ON VOLUNTERY BASIS AND DIDN'T GET A DIME! Then I did what proved to be a god given action. I lowered the price of food and drinks to the lowest possible rate, and we sold everything in less than two hours, managing to get the prizes a little bit higher. Then we started collecting empty bottles and cashed them in, and once again we managed to raise the prizes a little bit. I personally decided to give my own prizemoney for the demo- and introcompowinners. The prizes weren't that small anymore, but still a lot less than were hoping for. Although we didn't hear any comments about the prizes, we know some people were disappointed, which is very understandable. Why there was such small amount of Amigians at the party place...after all, we promised: 1) fun ; Oh, we had! No-one denies that, see yourself from the partyreports. 2) drinking inside allowed ; it was! The people drank beer in front of organizers and weren't thrown out, weren't even noticed! 3) extra features ; we had soccer, c64 compos, two live performances, funny organizers with a great sense of humour and will to help, selling of Amiga audiocd's straight from the AMIGA INTERNATIONAL at a specialprice, delivery of all the compoproductions on a cd-rom AT THE PARTY: in prize of a Chickennuggets at McDonalds! 4) some people were even allowed to have sex at the party area! 5) we had the lowest ticket prices than on any other bigger party 6) voting easier than ever! 7) state of the art, power upped compomachines with RTG cards, lot's of memory and shit like that. What went wrong? Honestly, I don't know! We, the organizers made everything (and believe me, more) as good as possible to provide a place for hundreds of Amiga users to come, and celebrate the coming back of Amiga but only a small bunch showed up. At MI97 we promised to have MI98, we learned from last years mistakes and were determinated on our goal. We worked hard through the year, especially the last couple of months. Just to witness a sad fact: a party like this doesn't seem to interest the masses anymore. the result: all this is making it hard for us to organize another Motorola Inside ever again. Not that we don't WANT TO, but it seems like a mad mans job to work so hard for such little amount of people. At the time we haven't decided whether to hold another Motorola Inside. But my feelings is that the things aren't looking too good. :-( Incase someone blames for organizing, check out these facts: The were delays on music compo. Just because ONE visitor asked if a Delfina soundcard could be used for his Digibooster module. Of course we wanted to make one more visitor a little bit happier and also offer the best soundquality for the Amiga people, so I and Leper/O'moses installed the Delfina. Ok, everything should work...the card is inside A4000...let the music compo begin. Ops. Problems, due to the fact that Delfina was affected by our videocannon, amplifiers or some other unknown reason the sound had an unbelievable amount of hiss. Well, let's try to get it work I said...let's delay the compo a bit more for better soundquality. We didn't manage to find the problem so we had to forget the Delfina. Let the compo begin! Ok...let's play the modules with Digibooster...it is Protracker compatible see. Fuck...the songs were replayed all wrong...Digibooster sucked big time... There were problems with intro compo. Well, we started testing all those intros so there would be no more delays. One worked, another worked...another worked...but what the fuck? One intro doesn't seem to work, it hung up...well, let's reboot and test the rest of the intros. Ops! Volume Work: is NONDOS and DH0: is validating...seems like somebody fucked up big time! Well, let's fix the problem and get on with the compo. We did fix the problem eventually, but once again we were missing the schedule more and more. There were problems with the democompo. One of the demos didn't work at all, one needed bizarre startups and modifications to the system partition not to mention the fact that we LET the people to bring demos WELL over the deadline, which left us a lot less time we had planned for setting up the compo. And our sorries to H&B for not showing their demo. They happened to mention it about 15 minutes before the democompo! Well, what the heck, it's no problem to add a demo to the list we already had. The bad news is that the demo is 4 megabytes long, and had to be downloaded from net! Ok, we are late anyway, so get your demo quickly and let's get the show rolling. I waited long enough to decide to start the democompo, with or without that demo. The same behaviour continued in all of the deadlines. People brought their work only minutes before the actual compo had been planned to start. We wanted as much contributions as possible and stretched the deadlines a lot, leaving us with less and less time to test and set up our things. WHY SO LITTLE PEOPLE CAME AFTERALL? Now this one amazes me! We had it all, all the good incredients to make up the best party ever. We had the much requested c64 compos which most of the people were eagerly waiting. The fact was that we got no releases except for music, and we had to cancel the c64 gfx- and democompo. We informed the people about MI98 as good as it's humanly possible. Through mailtrading, through diskmagazines, through IRC, through internet. The Invitationtext had been circulating for a long time, we released the invitationintro via mail and net. We updated the webpages so always the freshest possible information was available. We had organizer help available through phone, email, net and mail for any questions convernin the party. We were even promoting MI'98 in such events as Assembly and SAKU meeting, both gathering lot's of Amigians together. What we could have done better? The party was still a success. The releases were great, and the spirit of uniteness was there. Also the anti-PC mentality was rising and rising when we showed anti-pc videos, played anti-microsoft soundfiles and had some fun with Mr.Gates. It would be nice to hear what we did SO wrong it wasn't worth coming to the ONLY Amiga-only party in Finland. Now it might be too late...
