INTERVIEW WITH FACET Facet the NEW number one on the Charts! He has released lot of graphics lately and it seems like we will see a lot from Facet also in future! 911/Rebels has on behalf of RAW visited Facet and let's hear what Facet has to say: Why are you FACET / ANARCHY ? It all started with a guy called Dragonsoft, desperate searching for a steady 'cool' name. That same day my mother and I went to Breda (Dutch town) to shop. After a walk of half an hour my eyes fell on a big board with the name 'FACET' on it. It was a clothesshop. So there is the 'FACET' from, and ANARCHY because I'm one of a collection of chaps that is called ANARCHY. FACET actually means: For, Another, Cool, Event, Tell. me! Tell us a little bit about what you do when you're not sitting in front of your Amiga. What is your lifestyle like ? My life consists mainly of going to school. In my spare time I try to visit friends and do common things like going to pubs, get pissed and have the time of my life. Also I'm practicing on my father's piano to get some lousy toons out of it. I also try to have a steady relation with the best girl on this globe. I also doing common things like go to church, sing in the church, help my father in the garden, do the dishes.. you name it. I do it! For how long have you been active in this Amiga-scene , and is there anything you would like to tell us about the old days ?? Well son, in my young days I fought in the big war(hehe). Naah, anyway, I've been addicted to my tiny amiga for 3/4 years now and can't live one day without her. What I want to say about the old days is that the so called 'new scene', the scene at the moment, is getting nicer and nicer. Believe me, a lot of guys told me that the scene of years ago was better and more friendly than today but I think that's what they want to believe. The scene of these days is quite allright! Rumours are telling that you are together with one of brightest girls in Holland, is it true? When this question was asked I dated a girl called Rianne. Really a nice and bright girl but it didn't really work. So we stayed very good friends and we will sure go out for some times. But no tears please because now since two weeks I have a new women in my life. Her name is Iris and she is 20 year old. To round this question. She is the best, she is also motivating and stimulating me every minute of my day. I must say that she is far out the greatest girl I ever had in my whole life. (does this sound in love or what!) (Facet has promised RAW a picture of him and Iris in RAW 5.) You have had some success lately. Right now your the Most popular graphician in the scene. What would you like most of 100 pounds or the places at the future Eurocharts? The 100 pounds please. I really adore being popular but I'm not so good in the financial side of life. So I can use it. And when you have felt the air upstairs your needs to stay there are getting smaller and smaller. I have now been no.1 for 4 months and I would not be very frustrated if I would not be no.1 next issues. So I prefer money. (Did I get money for my graphics after all.) You have said that your are not the best graphic artist in the scene. Why are you on the top? Are you running your own promotion campaign? Why is it you and not Zoom? The reason why I tell everybody that I'm not the best is because I don't want to feel the best. I hope I never get the feeling I'm the best because, if I would feel like that I would become arrogant and a huge asshole. Others would hate me and I would loose friends. That's my opinion! About the campaign. I haven't set up any campaign. The only thing I did was drawing. and drawing and let very good coders use the produced material. Why Zoom isn't no.1 at this moment is only because his work isn't released fast. His slideshow is delayed every day and that's why nobody have seen so much of him. To get into charts you have to be active and release the right things at the right moments. Zoom has the right material and right times but has not got the right releases. GRAPHICS & GRAPHICIANS Could you explain me why people enjoy sitting in front of a monitor staring at a picture for hours and hours ? Or: Why do you do GFX ?? It is the kick doing work that is respected. It gives me a sort of kick showing to myself what I do and try to develop my skills every time. Also I try to mix, improve, develop things myself. And give a solid base to my fantasy. I can also look at pics for hours like today, I saw a TV programme with a report about a Dutch painter called 'Van Meer' I was really interested and saw a lot of his work. So I'll get some book and try to find something to draw on Amiga so the Amiga-scene can enjoy his great work too. Now tell me, What is it that you respect in other people's attempts to draw good graphs ? Or : Where do pay attention to most when judging a picture by someone else ? I think I'm first judging on the originality, then on the technichs in which the picture was drawn. I respect the challenge to get there where your aim points to. I have two aims. One is to make the ultimate picture (Aars?) and my other aim is to walk on the moon. But by the time I can walk there your grandkid will be sitting on your knee listening to stories of grandpa's great AMIGA years.. Hmmm,. Yes, maybe you're right but, as you know, a lot of Amiga GFX-ians are drawing pictures taken from fantasy & roleplay- books. Can you still say that there is any originality to be found in their GFX ??? I agree with the part about challenges though. Yes ofcourse, I don't think that all amiga graphicians excactly copy the original paintings to Amiga. There are always improved parts and things that are invented by the graphician himself. In my own experiences I can tell you that I drew the mountains from the hardcore-pic from my head. And the dragon was originally drawn by Boris. So I mixed the Boris thing with own stuff. And that's the way to practice. On that way I learned the technich how to draw a dragon and where to put a lightsource, skin, hair, eyes, ba*ls, etc. I also see more and more gfx-ians doing their own stuff.Boris Valejo is a name you hear quite often when talking about subjects for pictures. What do you like about him, and why is he so respected among graphicians? I like Boris because of his nude women. Naah. I think he IS one of the best Fantasy- painters at the moment and the main reason why he is so known among a lot of graphicians on Amiga is because his paintings get the right atmosphere on screen and in your mind. Also Borispaintings are a big challenge to draw from because of all details and perfection in almost all of his work. Most graphicians make up their logos and fonts, but have books at hand when starting on fullscreen pics; What about you ?? I'm doing all my logos instantly so, I'm loading dpaint and start on it. For fullscreen pictures I first look through all my books. Usually I already know where the pictures I want are. I'm always looking for an ultimate original picture. If I don't like a pic I will never do it. About copying from real painters I want to say Ofcourse the hard work's already done for you when you copy a pic but why having a hard time when you CAN have a normal, nice and pleasant time ??? Do whatever you want, it's just a matter of what you like. But I still prefer mixing gfx. Makes it my own and makes it professional after all. Can you recognize someone's style in the examples he uses for pics ? Please give us some examples.. I think you also can name a guy on amiga when I say TIM WHITE or BORIS. Can't you? Ok, I maybe have seen a bit more graphics then is released but to make a long story short. I can! Examples could look like this, ps. these states are made on the released pictures. For instance, If I say UNO, you can say Tim White and if I say Mithardir I think it's ok to say that he made a lot of Boris stuff and if I say Facet I can say. Well.. figure out yourself. I think, that there aren't many good Amiga- gfx-ians who draw pictures they have totally made up themselves , true ? There is one guy I'd like to mention here and his name is ZOOM. What do you think of his gfx, and, are many people able to do the things he does concerning imaginationand technique ?? To be honest, I don't know whether Zoom is copying them or not. One thing is for sure. If he isn't copying them he is awsome. But if he is copying them he is awesome aswell. As I said I do not care whether one is copying all his graphics or not. As long as it isn't digited I don't care I think Zoom's style & techinik are really great. Yesterday I heard the picture he did in SD#9 was originally made by the Zooms father on a wall in his room. Artistic family don't you think? In what way will Amiga-GFX develop itself in the near future, and do think a lot of GFX-ians want to jump to another, much better equipped Amiga soon ??? I am a bit afraid of new systems with trilion colors in Super- mega- hi-res Will it be worth making pictures in a resolution that it will look digited? Maybe it is. For owndrawn pictures it will be great. No dirty fingers again. But for coping pictures it will be a waste of time because if you would digitize in such a resolution and with so many colors you will get the same effect. I think there will be a new scene after/meanwhile Amiga. I already heard of a REBELS demo on the Superfamicom and I know a VISION guy who is working on a demo on the SNES aswell.(It will include a logo by me!) At this moment I hope the Amiga scene will last for some years. Please, sum up which graphicians deserve a well-earned place in the charts ? Have you spotted any new talents , e.g. people that could become known very soon ?? Here is a little list of underated gfx-ers in my personal opinion. Hein, Hof, Danny and after having seeing the MACK slideshow some minutes ago I must say that his slide is really Smart. PROFESSIONAL GRAPHICS Ok, I think a lot of the readers must have heard about your aspirations to go and work as a professional gfx-ian for the game company CORE DESIGN.. Tell us how you got in contact with them ??? It all started when I heard DAN and Rush telling me CORE needed a new gfx-an to work on games.I called CORE many times and they invited me for an interview. Everything went perfect and the airplain was great! I had a great week and jumped around with all Core design members. Great fun. After a week I was offered the job. And why didn't you take the job after all ?? Because of a bad workingcontract, since it's common to work in ENGLAND without a contract the contract was very very bad. Since I only wanted to work with a good contract I didn't accept it and went back to school. There are some more reasons I will not tell here that also brought me to the conclusion not going to Core Design. Do you have any advice for GFX-ians who want to earn money with their work and want to work for a game- company.. Believe in yourself and call to the manager of the certain company all the time. I called CORE a looooot of times before I got the interview. Could you tell us what competition you can expect when working in the professional game-sector.. How good are GFX-ians there? The gfx-ians in companies are usually better than every other gfx-ian in the scene. The are pro's. In CORE there are at least four gfx-ans that are beable to make gfx you and I would make go crazy. Not to remind you of other gfx-ians in other company's. There is no competition inside companies because usually they have to be a competition toward other companies so (at least in my case) the other more advanced graphians helps any time. Further I want to thank Lord Helmet for giving me a huge time I could use to make the title picture. Also I want to thank Diddle/SNT for letting me and KR'33 stay at his place when we went to the CSS. Great! Next article to hear The Facet story: "From Beginner to Elite" FOLLOW FACET TO THE TOP! Right now Facet are on the top of the Charts. RAW has got the exclusive rights to publish the story of Facet. Hear Facet telling about his trip to the TOP: It all started when I saw HEIN DESIGN's gfx on c64. (4 years ago) I was ashtonished, how could someone draw like that. I bought my c64 and started gfx, but nothing happened. Then my brother bought an Amiga and I started drawing on it. I was surprised with the things I made and since I used my brother's computer more than he did. I HAD to buy my own AMIGA. So I did!, I continued my gfx on there. I got in touch with VISION and got a disk with HEIN DESIGN gfx. A few months later I was allowed to call myself FACET OF VISION. Anyway. I was kicked out and joined again (1 week later). I practised and practised. I started doing my own FACET things. I saw guys around me enjoying my work. felt good but not good enough. I wanted to be in the charts, wanted to be respected. VISION used gfx but not enough. I drew more gfx that VISION could ever use. I joined groups like REBELS and ABSENCE as a double member. ABSENCE died and REBELS wanted me only as a only-Rebels member so I was in VISION-only again. After some things and parties I joined ANARCHY. Saw things growing. You must know that I'm a guy who can only develop when I'm motivated (can be done by a call, meet or letter) Then first, after Legalise it and Seeing is believing I saw my name on no.6 in the Nordic Report. That felt greeat! Then The World Chart put me on No.4, even better eh? Then I slowed down to no.9 in the Nordic report. That felt shitty! Then I drew the HARDCORE picture and got higher in the charts. voila! NO.1 in the months July/August. Ofcourse it has not only to do with the Hardcore pic.A lot of things are inflicted ofcourse. Anyway it feels great! One thing I don't want is that everybody sees me as THE best graphician of the scene , which I'm NOT ! If I would believe myself I would become bigheaded and that is what I hate!!!! I like to be in the chart as popular, not as best. I see it as an APREACIATE list . And that's the Gfx-story of Facet. In next RAW there will the story of another Chart-topper!
