Interviews with artists (article by Mystik/Anarchy)
***********************

OK,as an additional extra to the usual gfx-reviews I'll be interviewing
artists of the genre. What this involves is a usual bog-standard
interview, but included in the questions will be artist related
queries. For example : "How long have you been drawing on the Amiga?"
"How do you start a piece of art?"
                        Etc,etc...

Some of you may say 'bleurrgghhh, how boring!',but I think there are a few
people who may be interested in this idea, and until I get people
complaining, this will become a regular part of 'Stolen Data'!
Each issue I'll be writing to an artist,be he well known or just someone
who has impressed ME with something he has come up with.So get
drawing, and you too could be interviewed !!
This month I'm gonna kick off with a couple of well known artists, namely
J.O.E. and Bustman...

Interview with J.O.E., free member of SURPRISE PRODUCTIONS
carried out by M Y S T I K of A N A R C H Y
Date questions answered : 9/7/91

M : OK,I think I'd better start with some introductions...
So...what is your real name and how old are you?? Please describe
    yourself....hehe....
J : My real name is Josef! Or was it Hermann??? And my mother calls me
Bumsti. No, my real REAL name is Peter and with my 20 years I feel
almost like my own grandpa...! As some people know I live in Austria
( YES, that is the country with the high mountains, and the people
are all working as farmers. Yeah, and if we talk to eachother we are
yodelling! And finally we are all slow minded!). GOD BLESS AUSTRIA!

I just finished school ( Huahhaha!!! Endless sparetime!!! Endless
drunkeness!) and now at the moment I am enjoying my freedom!

M : We all know that you were a member of Scoopex, but why did you leave ?
J : I was a member of Scoopex??? Now seriously, I left Scoopex because
after a year it was too boring to be in this group anymore.
The reason was that my friends in this group ( Crazy Typer and
Challenger ) started some serious longtime-projects ( CT even quit
his Amiga - activities to work on PC!). And so the Austrian Scoopex
scene was a bit wasted for me. Ranger was very lazy, he rarely sent
me sum stuff, and so I left Scoopex. But I had a good time in this
group and met a lot of nice and cool people ( like: CT, Challenger
Jesus, Uncle Tom (!), Shark the Mullmann (HuHu), Heiko the Emmentaler
    and so on...)

M : Could you tell us more about SURPRISE PRODUCTIONS, who they are, and
their history? (if any?) Who are the members?
J : I have to say that I am only a free member of SP. The members
are some people of TRSI-Austria. Really nice people.
    (Erm,is that all?! - Mystik)

M : What groups were you in before Scoopex(if any?)and have you ever been
under a different Pseudonym? How long have you been drawing
    (in a group)?
J : Puh, a quite difficult question! I hope I can remember! So here's
    J.O.E.'s group-history:

    1. The Professionals (now SUBWAY) ( ca. Feb.`88 - Aug. `88)
    2. TSK-Crew (R.I.P.) (Aug.'88 - ca. Dec.'88)
    3. Scoopex ( Feb.`89 - May '90)

No, I never used another Pseudonym than J.O.E. For certain some of
you want to now what this shortcut means, but I can't tell - it's a
secret (Hoehoe!)! I am drawing seriously since I have got my Amiga (
since May `87). But I started to paint on the 64. It was a hard
job, but there I got my first experience. On the 64 I worked also on
a game (an adventure) for the first time.

                                                          CONTINUED......

 INTERVIEW WITH J.O.E. CONTINUED

M : Who do you admire in the graphics world? ( For BOTH quantity and
quality ) Why do you admire them in particular? What is that they
have done to impress you? List YOUR top 'faves'....
J : O.K. this answer could get the taste of arrogance, but don`t take it
too serious cause it is my PERSONAL opinion:

No.1a: Jim Sachs: He was the first and the best. I still haven`t
found out the whole technique of his pics. But I think he
is too lazy, too old and too arrogant. He was also my one
    and only idol.

No.1b: Brother Terminator of TRSI: I love his clean style. And his
texturehandling. And his antialiasing. But as we all know he is tooo
    lazy - who cares!

Hey, you masses of Artists out there, don`t be too angry, if you
are not mentioned, but I haven`t seen other guys who are painting
cosequent in manifique quality. Oh yes, I have heard `bout UNO, but
I only saw sum small loGOs, so I just don`t know what to say `bout
    him.

M : How do you start a piece of work that you do? (pictures AND logos)
J : Huhu, an ugly question! First I have to get some inspiration:
I catch the neighbour`s dog and fuck him one or two times. After
that I am running back to our house to hit my head against the walls
(after THAT my mother always forces me to remove the bloodstains from
    our house).
After gettin` an idea I take my fathers rifle and force my sister to
    paint another nice picture.

    O.K. - There`s no great technique behind my pictures. I don`t draw
on paper - and if, the sketches are max. 5cm x 5 cm and contain
only shapes. I only use Dpaint ( I luv it!) and sometimes Pixmate
I don`t want to describe the exact way how I am working. I can
only say that I am painting directly out of my MIND and when I'm
workin', I fall in a kind of ecstasy, so I can't often remember how
much time I exactly spent to make a certain picture.

M : Have you ever done any commercial work? Or are you still doing work?
    Who have you worked for?
J : I have done several projects, but most of them are still unreleased
I have just finished a german roleplay-game (?). It is called
    `Project Icarus` and I think it`s quite good. But don`t expect too
fabulous GFX, because I had only one week to draw it. Then there`s
an action-game called `Warrior`, still unreleased, where I did sum
pictures and all animated objects. That were the latest GFX. I also
made sum unreleased GFX for DEMONWARE.Or the titlepic for SIDMON V2.0
    But silence is golden ...!

M : Please could you tell us how long it took you to do the WHOLE of
your second slideshow, and why did you decide to do a slideshow?
Were you happy with the finished result?
J : The reason why I was releasing a slideshow was, that I had painted
a lot of pictures for fun ( after my first slide under TSK ) and
I had no special use for them. So I begged CT to fix me a nice
slideshow with my favourite music ( at this time ). The second
reason was that I wanted to show the world that I am painting
with fire under my ass and with bugs and flies in my head (????)!
I was quite happy with it. But I don't think that I will release
    another one.

                                                           CONTINUED.....

 INTERVIEW WITH J.O.E. CONTINUED

M : You obviously like the work that you do,otherwise you would stop. But,
have there ever been times when you've thought to yourself "Now,why
the fuck do I waste so much of my time doing this shit??!" ???
    Tell us about it/those.....
J : Yep, there was a time. As you all have noticed, I was making
`scene -holidays`. That was 1.5 years ago, when I got my own
flat. And as you can imagine it was more fun to stay and drink with
my friends, to show the girls my collection of antique video-games
(huahaha) and sleepin` in discotheques than paintin` alone in a
    dark room. And then I got a motorbike ( Yamaha 650 - 70 PS - Youh!)
So I nearly completely stopped my C-work.
But then my destiny was faster than my motorbike - I had a crash
The whole flesh was ripped off from my right big toe. I saw the
bone standing right out of the bloody mess at the end of my foot
That was seven weeks ago. Three days ago, I was able to wear shoes
again. Meanwhile I lost my flat and so I am livin` in our boring
village again. So I had no choice - J.O.E. IS BACK!

M : What have Surprise Productions planned for release in the next few
    months? (If anything...)
J : I don`t know what they`ve planned, but I hope when you read this
my first Music-Disk (Sound & GFX by J.O.E.) is already released. Then
you have to wait for the ultimate event ... TEMPEST!

M : Errmmmm,this is very hard,so I'll 'side-track' a bit...Have you got a
girlfriend at all?? Tell us more......sorry for the PERSONALS!!!!
J : When I crashed with my bike ( by the way, it wasn`t my fault), I
also crashed with my girlfriend . But it wasn`t the girl of my life
    so I didn`t really mind.
I think I am not a great CASANOVA, but I am satisfied <- and THAT`S
    the thing.

M : Is there anyone you HATE on the scene,be he/she(?) an artist,or
anyone. (That you'd like to tell them here)......hehehehehe......
    What a trouble-maker.....!!!
J : No, I don`t hate anybody on the scene. But I don`t like this standard
    filled -vectors-we-are-the-best-huba-huba-thousandofparts- unoriginal
demo-call-our-bbs-groups (puh!). And I also don`t like some people
with neonazistic habits. I think they are stupid and they only want
to be cool with a cheap effect.

M : OK then, what is your favourite demo and group?? Why?
J : Yep, here`s a list with my favourite demos:
    CEBIT `90/TCC - COMA/REBELS - TTT/REBELS -
    BARBRIANDEMO/PLASMAFORCE - MEGADEMO/RSI -
and many crazy&cool productions I can`t remember right now.

M : Please list your favourite coders and musicians....
J : I don`t have a favourite coder. But my musician-charts look like this
    1. KNECHT ROMEO/TRSI
    2. STATIC/REBELS
    3. UNCLE TOMAS/SCX
    4. FLESHBRAIN/CRUSADERS
    5. DR. SHIVAGO/EMETICS

M : I think this should be the end because I have run out of things to
ask....hehe....So...did you want to say anything to finish this
interview off?? Ask me anything!?? What??
J : Some final words to all of you: Think (drink) before you talk
always drink more than 15 Tequilas at one time and ... PEACE!

Oh, I nearly forgot it - I moved: Please don`t write to my old
private-address ( Langegasse blabla ...), try to get the new one.

M : I'd just like to say 'thanks alot' to J.O.E. for answering these
questions, and to you for reading this interview....

J : And I have to thank you, MYSTIK, for your interesting questions and
for writing the points between the J.O.E.!
    Bye!
