INTERVIEW WITH STEINAR APALNES
------------------------------

Many people around says that
friendship is more important than
fame. But nearly all of them just
have friendship in their mouth and
do no action! Sphinx/Network did a
lot of music for Network
productions, but suddenly he joined
a much smaller group (Airborn) and
quit his pseudoname. He choose
friendship instead of fame. Let's
ask him some questions!

- Why did you quit NETWORK ?

The reason is that all network
members lived so far away, that
personal contact was difficult.
Besides, Violence was a local group
and some of my old friends were
members. In that way, personal
contact is much easier.

How was the relations to the other
Network members ?

It was (is) very good indeed. I
still keep in touch with some of the
members.

Are you as active now as the time
you spent in Network ?

Well, to tell the truth, I wasn't
active in Network either. You see
almost all tunes which appeared in
the Network demos were made before I
joined Network.

Is Friendship more important than
fame ?

Friendship rules! (That's the
original one...) (Hi, Would you like
to write a friendship article for
us! Ed.) Don't think about fame,
think about your social life and
friends even if it means ruining
your fame.

The former name of Airborn was
Violence. Did the group change
their name because of the badly
arranged Amega party at Porsgrunn?

Airborn = Violence is NOT correct.
Violence split up in several parts.
The main formers of Violence started
a group called Argoth. Some other
indepentent guys, Espen Loeberg
(Pimf (Swapper in Ex. Violence),
Anders Claussen (coder in ex.
Violence) and Steinar Apalnes
(me...) formed the group called
Airborn.

A lot of your tunes are convertions.
How do you proceed to make the
convertions as perfect as possible ?
Well, first I listen very carefully
how the tune is built up. That is
to figure out the right chords, the
right bass and the main melody.
After that I try to mix together as
realistic sounds as possible. I
work a lot on the arrangements.

I think Oxygene IV is the BEST
convertion of any Jarre tune. How
long time did you use to convert
that tune?

Honestly I'm not sure. But
converting almost any tune doesn't
take half the time as composing your
own tune.

What do you like best, convert tunes
or compose your own music?

It's just as fun converting tunes as
it is to compose own music. Of
course it is MUCH more challenging
to compose your own tunes.

Why convert tunes when you know that
you can never make as good as the
original?

The reason why I convert is that I
get real pissed when I hear a tune
which is badly converted, in order
to show that it is possible to make
a pretty good convertion which at
least reminds you of the
arrangement.

You quit your Pseudoname, WHY?

Because pseudonames sounds a bit
stupid (no offence Borge, I really
like the movie Spaceballs too!)
Besides, if you address a person by
his real name it sounds more social.

Who do you think are the best Amiga
musicians ?

Personally I think Walkman is great
because his arrangements suits the
very good composed melody perfect.
But honestly, I don't like to
evaluate people.

Will we hear some music from you
soon?

Hopefully I will put together some
tunes and a music disk soon. But I
am about sick and tired of Amiga's
only 4 sound channels.

Do you think you are stronger than
Arnold ?

Arnold... my cat? Ah, you are
talking about Mr. Terminator. I
laugh in the face of his muscles
(ha, ho, hi, mo)

What do ya think of HipHop music?

I really like HipHop, because it
0makes me laugh! Have you heard
Crystal Waters 'Gipsy Woman' ? It's
the perfect example of great HipHop.
I don't compare HipHop with music,
but with jokes. The poorer, the
better. So the inventor of HipHop
must have a great sence of humour.

Last Words

Well, I'd like to say hello to all
of my friends in the scene and a
VERY special hello to all Networkers
" I am looking forward to see you
