Everything Dies PPC/Venus Art Rush Hours '98 This is the first demo PPC ever released and I think that it's a good demonstration of the real PPC power. I don't want to offending no one, but I must say that Virtua Art 3D's routines by Noe and BJSebo aren't really fast if compared with other non-Venus Art's productions. I presume that the reason is because these aren't written in assembly, but in C with the whole demo running in full multitasking. Of course, this disadvantage on 680x0 that constrict to use a very fast processor (possibly faster than 68060!!!) to obtain the right speed, become a great advantage on PowerPC processors! C sources are easily portable without too many changes and, said the truth, it's a BIG pleasure to run on your PowerPC board something showing its real power, especially if comparable with 680x0! Talking of the demo: It's an average production with the common lack in design of too many demos, that is to use music changes as link between effects completely different for concept and theme. After the classic Venus Art title with the Venus marble bust, some 3D letters flyies on screen composing the title of the demo, then a big ball with bump mapped texture and some horns fluctuates on the screen. The following object is a star env-mapped covered with some 3D layers in transparency that breaks off to reveal some metallic reflex on surfaces of star. Then four env-textured gears flyies on screen while rotating on thereself. The next effect is very impressive: A helicopter full of lights and lens flares reflexes is flying on air among some skyscrapers very ugly textured, to end its fly under a bridge on a river near this palaces. After a good picture by Madd there's a little Quake-inspired scene: A girl with a big gun is running on a bridge and stand before three crucified human shapes and a big horned devil. Another picture (this by Neuromancer) and a wonderful scene appears: A kind of acquarium with tropical fishes with very good textures. Then another picture and another scene: A bee is flying among light reflexes to lay down on cheese(?) object on a table. The camera rotate and, on the same table, a spider is walking to the cheese. Last effect: A strange 3D object breaks a transparent layer to reveal its dance on the screen while some words appears to conclude this demo. Graphics are not of same level: Some objects by Zack, Calf and At0m are very original and with fantastic textures (like fishes), some other are common (the star) or recycled (the spider is the same of Quagmire!). Pictures instead are ok. The music piece by Wierza is a good module in demo style with a techno touch. Worthy to mention is that this demo run also with Cybergraphics and uses AHI for music. Only a regret: This demo crash if running on a interlaced AGA screen! That would be an incredible demonstration of power for a PPC board! Coding : Good - fast with PowerPC, how could be if optimized? 2D Graphics : Very good - some very accurate texture 3D Graphics : Good - some common or not original objects Music : Good - a good demo tune Design : Not good - music link is not enough! Overall vote: Good - If you have a PPC board you must have it!
