THE FRENCH DEMO COMPETITION:
         A SCANDAL!
----------------------------

Remember the interview with Tom L. i the last issue? Here are some other facts about the big French national demo competition.
You have, without doubt, seen some demos with the "GENERATION 4" slogan. All those demos were done for a competition organized by a french paper magazine called "Generation 4". Some words about this magazine: It was born two years ago and it's axed on the games concerning all High-tech computers and consoles.
The competition was both on Amiga & Atari ST. Of course I will only deal with the Amiga competition. First of all, the prize was an Archimedes computer with a Multisync monitor. As you can see the first prize was very encouraging for the competitors! So I will list some of 'em now: Funx, Demons, Alcatraz (France), Sun connection (Now called Legend), Thomas Landspurg, Passion, Impact and Dragons.
Well, the theme of the competition was not to make the best demo. It was to make the best demo with the theme of the "36 15 Gen4". It is a kind of french BBS (1200baud). This kind of "BBS" is very expansive and therefore the magazine earns a lot of money! On Amiga the magazine got about ten demos. What is very important to be mentionned and noticed (also underlined?!) is that they said that all demos with ripped gfx or ripped music would be IMMEDIATLY excluded... Ok... but then how the hell can you explain that the first prize won by Dragons was full of ripped music and Gfx! It has been a real scandal in France and a lot of guys were really deconcerted by this fact! Then a little war between Dragons (who won the first prize) and Thomas Landspurg who presented an absolutely amazing demo that you may know under the name of "A TRIP TO MARS" started. This demo was really deserving to win! At this point I would underline the fact that I'm staying fully impartial and I'm only taking the point of view of the majority of the French freaks! Everybody in France thinks that the results were really not fair! When you are thinking about the quality of the demos done by Thomas Landspurg and you see that he never won anything, it is very sad! That explains why Thomas will now work for software-companies and stop all demos-activities. The demoscene has just lost one of its coder-legends.
There is a moral to this bad facts: Professional computer game magazines are maybe good in testing games but certainly still have to learn how to test demos!
