Dope - a man which is far beyond his ideals. A very promising coder, and one of the main organizers behind the Somewhere In Holland gatherings, which are still getting bigger every year. Every now and than he even finds some time to write a bunch of articles for certain magazines, either in the scene or in real life. A multi talent really. In December 1995 he has just turned 20, and with this his teenage years are finally behind him! Let's see what he is all about, we tried to make it as accurate as possible.

Handle: Dope
Group: Spaceballs
Real Name: Joost Brugman
Age: 20
Years in the amiga scene: 4
Former groups: White Label, Reality and Lemon.
Function: Coder, SIH organizer

02What kind of person is Dope of Spaceballs?

01"I am a person who really works very hard, with to little time for himself. Most of the time I am far ahead of my ideals.."

02What is it that keeps you awake at night?

01"What keeps me awake is that a few people still haven't received their prize money from the Somewhere In Holland '95. Everything is taken care of now, but probably some people haven't received it because of slow bank transactions."

02What is your best quality?

01"I think my best quality is that I can do what people expect from me under all conditions, especially concerning Somewhere In Holland."

02And your worst?

01"I am easily irritated by things that I don't find important but other people do. Especially if they start nagging about those things."

02It is said that you're very egocentric. Are you?

01"Egocentric? I don't think so. However, I am a very critical person. Both towards myself and towards others. But someone who doesn't know me that good might think of it as being egocentric."

02Do you have many friends in the scene?

01"No, quality above quantity!!"

02What is your definition of friendship?

01"Someone who you can always turn to and who will do anything for you if necessary."

02Do you believe in God?

01"Not in God from the bible, but I believe there is more between heaven and earth than we know of."

02What is your goal in the scene?

01"Once my goals in the scene were fame and glory. Somewhere In Holland was the jumping off-point of my career. It means a lot of work and a lot of professionalism, but when something like that is done well, it's a good basis for a career in real life."

02What is love to you?

01"Almost the same as friendship, maybe in a bigger form, more open..."

02Who gives you that?

01"The guys from Somewhere In Holland, whom are also my closest friends."

02Which is your worst moment in the scene?

01"The cancellation of Somewhere In Holland 2, that was really like the end of the world and, besides that, things aren't so bad. A bit of a mess in (the old) Lemon. and Spaceballs, you know, ordinary things..."

02Which are your greatest moments in the scene?

01"I think they are Somewhere In Holland '95 and the time when I beat Hannibal's dot-routine with mine." (In the SIH '93 invitation Ed.)

02What else would you really like in your scene-career?

01"Without doubt making Somewhere In Holland the best party ever to exist and that in such a way that it isn't only great for the scene but also for outsiders. The scene isn't just a bunch of nerds, but a group of people with a similar (great) hobby."

02What does money mean to you?

01"A lot and a little. A lot in the form of proving my career. (outside the scene... achieving... personal...) A little because I don't care about money. If anyone wants to borrow f1.000,- from me, no problem."

02What is your motto?

01"Have fun."

02Choose: Social life or the scene?

01"Social life, absolutely. But I believe they can combine very well, nevertheless."

02What would you like to say to all (beginning) party-organizers?

01"Think well about what you're doing; don't take any risks, always make sure you know what you are doing. "

02Can you take criticism?

01"If it's well defended, sure, I even like criticism! I do try to defend myself, but if it's just, I accept it."

02Do you have any hobbies besides the scene?

01"I don't know. Somewhere in Holland is work for me, definitely not a hobby! Furthermore, I do things I really like. But if you work with computers for about twelve hours a day, then you don't talk about a hobby anymore."

02Please describe your hometown.

01"It's merely one street where everything happens. It lies close to a (big) city called 'Arnhem'. My hometown is really a (small) town were people live to go to e.g. Arnhem for their work."

02People say you really made it in the scene, do you ever dwell on it?

01"No, I don't. However, I'd still like to win the first prize in a demo competition someday, but these days that isn't so important for me anymore."

02Thank you very much for this interesting and also very open conversation. If you wish to greet somebody, please take this opportunity to give them your regards here in Oepir Risti.
