Interview with Conner/Sect Profile ------- HANDLE: Conner AGE: 18 COMPUTER: Amiga 2000HD, Amiga 1000 (defunct) GROUP: Sect ROLE: Coder HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE SCENE ? Well I guess there are a few ways to answer this question. My first computer was the A1000 which my mother bought back in 1986 or thereabouts. The whole scene thing is only fairly recent. I was introduced to it by Krion when he started attending my school back in 1992. At the time, I believe he was equally impressed by demos and the like and wanted to see if he could do something like it. The first thing I contributed to a demo was some very tedious work for Guru Meditation. It involved transferring some simple pictures into code (A whole lot of dc.w's) so that the pictures (which happened to be words) could be rotated and zoomed. I did this shitty work for Krion in exchange for help with coding. WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE AN AMIGA ? I didn't really know an alternative existed I don't think. :) I saw an Amiga in a shop in North Sydney and commented to my mother how impressive it was. I think there may have been Archon on one machine, DPaint on another... And my mum bought one! I couldn't believe it. Apparently, Amigas had been recommended to her by her colleagues at the ABC as that was what they used. We also got Beta video machines recommended to us from the same sources. Interesting, considering the way Beta has gone and some say Amiga is going. In both cases, the superior product is losing out. That's bad news. WOULD YOU EVER SELL YOUR AMIGA AND BUY A PC ? I would never "trade up" to a PC if that's what you're referring to. I may get one in addition to my Amiga, but not in place of it. WHY/WHY NOT ? There's nothing that I want to do on a PC that I can't do at least as good, if not, better with the Amiga. While that remains the case, it'll always be the computer for me. Apparently we Amiga-heads are renowned for our fierce, unyielding support of the machine. And why not, damn it!? WHAT FORMER GROUPS WERE YOU INVOLVED IN BEFORE JOINING SECT ? I was unaffiliated with any group before joining SecT. Although, Guru Meditation was a Digital Access production. Don't know what that counts for. :) THE LATEST OZ SURVEY BY RAPTOR REVEALED SOME TROUBLING NEWS ABOUT THE GROUP SECT.. TELL US WHAT'S GOING ON ? Well, I can't tell you a lot really. I certainly wish I could tell you more. :) SecT is a group which is not well-unified. All the members are scattered around Australia with no real concentration of talent in any one spot. I think everyone realises this. However, I have pledged to stay with SecT until they break up or until my talents develop to such a level where I can move on. I may not have coded much at all, but I arranged a section on Midnight Caller which Budds very generously provided and I think more people know about SecT through my having become a member. Perhaps that sounds a little egotistical, I dunno. :) YOU SAID YOU'VE GIVEN UP CODING ? WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW ? Yes, that's right. Coding is still something that interests me and I'm still trying to learn more about it. My main focuses now are the board which I hope will be up before too long and music. We'll see what happens. :) Perhaps uni will help with the coding. Who can say? :) WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT STATE OF THE SCENE ? Well, there's an awful lot of bitching about it. I think it's justified to a certain extent. I think there are indisputable facts about the scene, especially here in Australia. There are talented people in Australia for one. There are lazy talented bastards in Australia for another. :) I would like to see a little more competition in the spirit of fun and a little less bitching. NAME THE 3 BEST MUSICIANS IN OZ. I haven't heard much Australian music to tell the truth. I like Cool Col J's style. You can always tell when it's a CCJ mod. :) I'm actually pretty impressed by Serkul's stuff but I'd like to hear more. For a third, you're really pushing it. :) NAME THE 3 BEST CODERS IN OZ. Krion, Storm and Netrunner in no particular order. I see an awful lot of Krion's code. Wish I saw more of the other's. :) NAME THE 3 BEST GRAPHICIANS IN OZ. Souri, Infinity and Kimba. Though I want to see more of Snykers' work. I really like this guy's unique style. NAME THE BEST 3 GROUPS IN OZ. Cydonia has to come first here. And by a long shot too. Just think about the membership involved! Pearl comes second. They'd better do something soon though. After that, prolly Digital Access for the stuff they've done in the past. They're really branching out now. Of course, I'd like to see more demo-oriented stuff from them, but who wouldn't. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF ESCOM BEING THE NEW OWNERS OF THE AMIGA? I'm not really an authority here. I don't know enough about them. Anyone who says things can't get worse is fooling themselves. I sure hope things get better. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY ANYTHING ELSE BEFORE WE END THIS INTERVIEW? Well I'd like to pledge my continuing support for the scene. I'd like to offer my encouragement to everyone who's starting out. I'd like to say hi to the many friends I've made through the scene. I hope you'll be seeing some fruits of my labour in the not-too-distant future. :)
