Whammer Slammer - only an end part?
by Zulu & Grey of REBELS

After the making of Switchback and the enormous confusions that took place afterwards, we were quite happy that Conan and Newton decided to make a demo for The Party 4. We were now able to concentrate on other projects, like the planned 40K Intro. But this idea had to be dropped almost immediately, during a phone call between Exciter and Zulu; the two concluded that both Conan and Newton were busy enough with the main part, so someone had to do the end part four our forthcoming demo. And that someone was us! As a result of this, Excess explained to us how his raytracing part should look like. Some days later we received the modules from Chromag and Vocal. But Chromag's tune was much too long for the raytracing, since it was originally planned that the asteroids would be only looped for one time.

Chromag had to decrease the playtime and we thought about the idea of including some routines. During this time Exciter had been calling up Conan and Newton quite often, and they were both very confident that the demo would be ready in time. Therefore we worked hard on the end part, as it had to be ready about one week before The Party, since it had to be sent to Denmark for inclusion with the rest of the demo. Two weeks before Christmas we started to link the end part and soon realized that we wouldn't be finishing it before The Party. When Exciter informed Conan and Newton about this fact, they both assured him that everything was fine. We finished the end part and started our funny trip to Denmark.

At the party place, we could only spot a few number of visitors running around, since we had arrived quite early, so we asked Chromag for some samples and we started to work on our competition module, A Kind Of Love, which was finished during the next days. We all waited for Conan and Newton to include our end part in their demo.

But not everything went according to plans. Conan and Newton didn't have any demo at all; only some more or less finished routines! We all were very disappointed and started to discuss wether we should release the end part as it was, or simply nothing. Conan told us that he wasn't going to code anything at The Party itself, so we thought that Lussar'n might have some routines, but he wasn't able to attend The Party. Finally, we decided to make a kind of intro part with some more graphics and another module from Chromag. Of course we didn't have any other routines, so we coded one in a big hurry and included another one from Newton.

Some Rebels had the idea to include another raytracing onto the second disk! Lack of disk space, made this an impossible feat, so we finally concluded to use a third disk. Some demos in the competition have been started from hard disk, although the rules forbid this, so no one should complain about the amount of disks we have decided to use!

After 20 hours of non stop hard work the demo was finished and we could enjoy our well deserved sleep.

After all, Whammer Slammer is probably the first demo ever, to gain a fifth place in a big demo competition with only an end part!
