Scene Meeting Dr.Dreyer Destination: Scene Meeting
By Dreyer
The 20th to 22th February once again a
little party called Scene Meeting,
arranged by Iris, was held. The event
was located at Denmark's nose, in a
town called Grenå. It took place in a
school, or rather in a gym at a school
that Iris had borrowed. It was a
small party with about 43 attenders,
97 to 100% Danes, which secured a good
party atmosphere with no PeeCee lamers
downloading GIFs all the time and
similar.
Competitions
The competition were, of course,
demo-, intro-, gfx-, trace-, 4ch.
music-, and multi-ch. music-compo,
last mentioned was cancelled because
noone delivered a single tune
(hardcore Amiga fans?). Also a few
surprise compos got arranged: Gfx,
music and a little game-compo. Also,
suddenly some invented a compo where
you had to create a game using only
ASCII, and the genre should be either
Tetris, Worms or Doom-clones. At
least two competitors joined this
compo, and the result was quite
fascinating, especially the
Doom-clone, which was put together in
a hurry from - more or less - scratch,
looked impressive. The surprise-gfx
was abused with mostly "funny"
pictures and the like, I don't really
remember the music-compo, but I sure
do remember the game-compo: Stear a
naked goblin walking with one of its
legs in the air through hordes of
mindless zombies, if you don't kick
them you're dead... That was a real
laugh.
The Depth of 28
Compared to the party's size there was
a great amount of releases, and at the
same time the quality was quite good.
The demo compo had two entries, one
from Depth and one from Loonies, both
quite nice. Also in the intro compo
were some nice productions, but also
some made for fun only. My favourite
(concerning the amusing part) was
'27+1' made for the Depth crew, who's
members suffers from number-phobia.
As you might know they can't tolerate
the number 28. And guess what: This
intro contained 28 pictures with the
number 28 in it... It was some really
realistic surround sound I had there,
standing between the big screen and
Depth!
When there were no compos on, Iris (or
whoever got their hands on the '060
running the show) tried to show some
of the old classic demos, but with
only little luck, they simply had some
difficulties to communicate with the
processor. Generally the computer
plugged to the big screen wasn't too
stable, but it was never worse than
you could reboot and start again...
Overall
Iris is satisfied with the party, it
was a success. Everybody had a good
time, and even though Iris got an
unexpected bill for installation of
power (300$) they were happy, also,
they are willing host another Scene
Meeting somewhere in Denmark. My
suggestion is: Be there when it
happens!

Scene Meeting 1998 Ransom/Iris Scene Meeting 1998 report
by Ransom/Iris
The Arrival
It was late in the evening Thursday
night, when a white Toyota Carina
approached 'Østre Skole' in the almost
forgotten city called Grenaa. The two
tall persons in the car were known as
Ransom/Iris and Constrictor/Intense.
They were here because Darkhawk/Iris
had called for their help, he knew
that they would be needed if he was to
complete his mission - Organizing The
Scene Meeting 1998.
After searching the enourmous complex
called 'Østre skole', our heroes
finally found their self proclaimed
god, Darkhawk. Much to their
surprise, Darkhawk had made some
organizing mistakes, the gym hall they
were supposed to use was filled with
girls playing basket ball. The sight
of girls obviously confused the
organisers, what were they to do?
Talk with them? Impossible, they
could be dangerous.
After long and intense discussions, it
was decided that the only possible
solution was to call the porter. A
porter is a very powerfull man, the
group trusted that he would solve all
their problems. But they were wrong,
when he finally arrived he brought
more problems to our already troubled
group of wannabe organisers. The
porter denied them access to the hall
during the night, and further more
required professional electric
installations. Since the porter had
even more authority than the beloved
organiser (Naaah! That's a lie! -
Darkhawk), we had to do as he
requested. So everybody were locked
in a room with only one computer.
When the porter had left, Darkhawk
immidiately felt the power streaming
in his veins again, he quickly decided
that Ransom/Iris had to learn Scala
and set off some presentations for the
upcoming event. Not daring to cross
his good friend and organiser, Ransom
complied with only few complaints.
During the dark night much work was
done, and only very little sleep was
had.
Early next morning, the team had new
strength and was ready to work hard
and long. This was necessary if they
were to have the party place ready at
10:00 as promised in the invitation.
Darkhawk was kind enough to tell
everybody what to do, and then go get
some breakfast at the nearest baker.
Upon returning from the baker, people
were crazy to get the orange juice
they had ordered, but not knowing the
difference, Darkhawk had bought Cola
instead. There were no complaints,
because nobody had any doubt that this
man had enough power to crush us all.
Anyway, work continued and at one
point one of the members could almost
swear that he had seen Darkhawk lift
something. This could have been a
fatamorgana though.
Not forgetting the wise words of the
porter, an electrican was called for,
he would be happy to help us out, if
we paid him 2000,-. After scratching
his head for a second, Darkhawk
accepted the offer. So now power and
tables were finally ready.
The First Encounters
The group now sat back in silence and
awaited the first guests.
About six hours later the silence was
broken when the first guests arrived,
what a relief! From now on and untill
late at night, there was a steady flow
of new people. Many had come from
strange far away places where another
language was spoken.
There was a very good atmosphere in
the hall, everybody were happy and
chatted with each other. Some were
drinking beers, others were coding and
some were just talking. It was
reported, that a few people did all
three things at once. They must have
belonged to the so-called elite.
At one point during the great party,
it was time for a game compo.
Darkhawk thought he had done a good
job picking a game nobody knew. But
he faild again, at least 2 of the guys
entering the compo knew the game. One
of them proved to be THE master of the
game 'Kick It'. Ib/Depth was quite
unbeatable.
Time flew by as everybody was having a
great time, and all of the sudden it
was almost time for the compos. Fast
gfx were up first, and Ransom had no
idea for a theme so he humbly asked
Darkhawk for help, with his help a
theme was invented, and a palette was
made in a great rush. It seems like
the rush was too great, because
several people complained about a
shitty palette. Were they afraid of a
challenge?
But the contributions turned out good
anyway, as did they in all the compos
execpt the Multi-channel compo, where
no entries were delivered. As the
contributions came in, and the compos
were held, one person in the hall had
to use all his time trying to get
Scala working properly. He was
reasonably succesful, not counting the
few crashes in the gfx compos. Said
individual was later rewarded when he
won one of the compos (hehehe).
The Climax
The climax was reached when the last
compo, the Demo Compo was shown on the
big screen. Two great demos were
presented, one from Loonies and one
from Depth.
The large crowd in the hall now had
some hours to decide who to vote for,
during this time demos were shown on
the big screen, new aswell as old.
Damn, those old demos were hard to get
working.
At 09:00 the voting stopped, and the
counting began. An independent group
of counters were established, Amy
Djurs counted and counted, and finally
brought delivered the results to the
Iris crew. The results were stunning,
Iris had won two compos without
vote-cheating. This was really great,
and the organiser actually smiled a
little... No kidding.
People accepted their prizes and were
happy, the organisers had collected
some money in a Cola bottle, this was
also given away.
After grabbing their money, people
quickly started leaving. Leaving all
the hard work to the organisers, but
Darkhawk saw it coming, and quickly
left the place. This was a really
smart move, and proves that he is made
of the stuff organisers should be made
of :) So we started carrying down the
tables, some were filled with cheese,
others with chocolate. Well, nobody
cared really, and after working hard
for a few hours the place was as
pretty as that late Thursday night I
was talking about earlier.
It was now time for Ransom and
Constrictor to go home, so they said
goodbye to the last people, started
the car and drove back. What a great
party, but shame on the people from
#amigadk who never showed up.
