THE BSE 1998 BELGIAN SCENE EVENT __After the mediocre success of the first Belgian Scene Event, the organisers had announced some improvements, and so the second edition of this party promised to get a lot better than last year's fiasco... __Due to the fact that Raven, Kill'O'Byte and Andy / Nuance didn't have enough money nor time to attend the party, I was forced to travel there alone by train without the possibility to take a computer with me. I arrived at the party place on Friday morning, even before the official opening, so ofcourse the place itself was rather empty. The hall was nice, it featured enough electricity, clean toilets (Each having a 'Intel Inside' sign above it. -Ed.) and a little bar where you could buy snacks, sandwiches, some soft-drinks and beer! Especially the possibility to buy beer was heavily used and appreciated, most of all by the Iris and Maximum members. Or like Darkhawk expressed it somewhen around midnight: "I don't know how much beer I drank today, but we started at 9 o'clock this morning!" __Friday night the hall was still rather uncrowded, and people started to fear that no more visitors would arrive. Luckily I had brought a video tape with 4 hours of classic A500 demos on it, so we were able to enjoy ARTE, State of the Art, Mental Hangover, Hardwired and other great productions on the big-screen! During the night the big-screen was switched off, cause the stage in front of it was used as the sleeping area. This lead to very low activity during the night and also to some boredom for the people who weren't tired. __Saturday morning a long awaited guest arrived, namely Petro Tyschtschenko, managing director of Amiga International! He gave away lots of Amiga merchandise products, including pens, posters, stickers and CD's, but he didn't seem very fond of starting a discussion about the Amiga's future, which was rather disapointing. But at least he shows interest in the scene and before he left he expressed his appreciation for what we're doing and that we still believe in the Amiga. __Later on, the organisers were able to show a really interesting video, shot one day after Commodore went bankrupt in 1994. It was done by Dave Haynie and showed the secluded offices and rooms in the American Headquarters of Commodore. If you want to know more about this video and the fall of Commodore back then, you should read the seperate article elsewhere in this mag. __Soon it was about time for the competitions. They originally had been scheduled to take place during the whole day, but technical problems lead to one big competition block on Saturday night. Nobody seemed to be bothered by this delay, yet the technical problems caused some conflicts, amongst it the fact that E-Liza / Maximum's competition picture got lost, and though it was officially shown some time after the other pictures it did not appear on the result list... (?) __The graphics competition was dominated by JCS / Factor7's picture, though it was most probably not created on an Amiga (We know his Photoshop skills, that's for sure -Ed.). The music competition was won by Maniac / Crux, only a few points in front of Notman / Iris. It was also Iris to win the 40KB intro competition, followed by Nuance's entry. Finally, the demo competition was won by Sector7 with a nice demo coded by NoName, which meant a brand-new A1200 Magic Pack for them. Second came a demo by Clary and company, but due to a HD crash shortly before deadline the quality of the animations was not as good as in earlier productions. __During the party there were also two live acts by a DJ who had brought all his equipment along. He was experimenting a lot, so the flow of music was often interrupted, yet it offered a change from all the MP3s and modules played the rest of the time. __All in all, BSE 1998 was a nice party, and considering the very small scene Belgium has, the approximately 50 visitors were a good result, and with attenders from TRSI, Scoopex, Haujobb, Iris, Nuance, Sector7, Drifters, Crux and Maximum the scene was represented quite well. In case there will be a further edition next year, the organisers should try to announce the event even more, to attract some additional visitors... ...
