CeBit `92 Party
Chaos in the Youth Center
As on every german exhibition a Party
was also organized after the CeBit `92
in Hannover. The Party took place on
the 14.03.92 directly after the doors
of the CeBit were closed. So most of
the freaks who were present on the
exhibition met on this party.
A great chance to get the whole german
scene together for a cool party, but
as always this chance was destroyed by
the organization...
This time CULT had the luck to be
responsible for the event. They
offered a Youth Center as party-place.
Not the best place for hundret freaks
to meet, because the visitors were
spread all over the house causing a
total chaos. The rooms were quite
small, hardly enough place for 20
people. All in all a place absoluty
not suitable for a party.
As usual CULT spread the invitations
on the CeBit. As Commodore seemed to
be interested in this event of their
customers, they even made some
advertising for it. They read it
using their Hifi-equipment, so almost
every freak got to know about it.
The party-place was already absolutly
overcrowded as we arrived. But at the
enterance we got our first shock. The
enterance fee was changed from 5DM (as
stated on the invitations) to 10DM.
So we waited some moments and wondered
if this party was really worth the
money.
During this time I heard one of the
organizers talking to a Sysop about
the visitors of the party. From this
dialog I got the impression that this
guys`s opinion about their visitors
was not very good. They said that
they didn`t care about them as far as
they were absolutly unfamous and
unimportant. It was only important
that they paid for the party. (For
germans: Es fielen Ausdruecke wie
`Fussfolk` und `Hauptsache sie
zahlen`.)
The high enterance fee was, as stated
by CULT, absolutly neccesary, because
the costs of the party were about
8000-10000 DM. I think that there`s
one 0 too much. 800-1000 DM is more
realistic.
Finaly we decided to enter (,at least
to get infos for this report). As the
Party place was really chaotic it was
quite hard to find some guys we wanted
to talk to. But I had a few nice
chats with some of my friends...
About 100 guys were present. Some of
the groups I happened to meet were:
Sanity, Razor, TSB, Design, Pirates,
Treacl, Interactive...
Nothing of importance happened till
the sound-competition. The comp was
held in a room offering only enough
space for 1/4 of all the present
people. So I had no chance to get an
own impression of the sounds. But I
think the quality was not very high.
16Beat/Razor 1911 won this comp with a
tune he composed the night before in
1 1/2 hours. The second place got
BTH/Jackbox and Jester/Sanity made the
third one.
The graphics- and demo-competition was
held in something you might call a
very small cinema.
Flagman/Divina won the GFX-comp with a
pic used in their trackmo Technofright
released about half a year ago. The
second and the third place got
Navy/Vanish.
The demo-comp showed again the low
standart of the german scene. The
only acceptable demo was done by
Dreamer/TRSI. So this one made the
first place. The rest didn`t deserve
to be called a demo. They were just
intros of more or less quality. The
second place made a intro by Amnesia.
The third price got Cyborgs.
One of the main attractions was the
guy from Commodore who had already
read the invitation on the CeBit and
was now really present on the Party.
He held again a short speech about the
relationship between Commodore and the
scene. After the Comp he tried to
copy some of the demos. He said he`d
show them on the CeBit the next day.
I don`t know if he kept his
promise...
But it`s obvious that Commodore tries
to build up a good relationship to the
scene. I hope they keep up this in
future...
All in all the Party was a typical
exhibition party. The organizers
failed to hold a nice meeting for the
whole german scene. They missed a
chance to improve their reputation. I
can only look forward to the Expo `92
Party in Cologne. I hope that a more
skilled group will take the
responsibility for the party there
(What about Sanity, D-TECT, Cytax,
Spreadpoint, Razor...). I think that
it is possible to organize a great
party after an exhibition, but the
reputation of this style of parties is
going more and more down. So act now!
