Interview with Holly
Jazz/HauJobb

                             I N T E R V I E W

           with by

            Hollywood Jazz

He is one of the best known British musicians around and just landed a
massive success with his MONO Project. Many people know him as he
was a member in Axis but he left the group to find a new challenge.
He is Hollywood! - and he likes the oldskool flavor...

? Hi Hollywood! I think you don't mind to introduce yourself?
Many people know you but who are you exactly?

! Well, I'm English, I'm 21 years old now (wow, old), nowadays I'm a
professional game designer for a big software company, working on PC
games, and I`ve been a fan of demos and the whole 'scene' since 1990.

? You've been in the scene for some years now, tell me what is your
motivation to stay in this scene?

! It's the friendship and cool guys, the pleasure when your stuff or your
own group's stuff gets spread, and most of all it's the creativity -
the scene produces some amazing art of all kinds. Oops, does that sound
pretentious? All I mean is, the scene's fun, as long as you make it fun
    for yourself.

? It seems that you have a weird fascination with Dutch groups. You've
been member of a.o.; Freestyle, Jetset, Lunatics, Desire and Axis. Tell
me what makes Dutch groups so interesting?

! Hehe, I'm not sure anything does. :) I just became friendly with a group
of Dutch people, and I kept those friends through all the groups we went
through.. I guess the Dutch are one of the nations that the English
relate to most easily, too. Something to do with William of Orange? :)

? Your Mono Project is really a success i think, what is the motivation
behind this Project.. Why was it you who founded it????
! Well, I'm pleased people think it's successful. The motivation behind it
was that I saw PC music groups like RR and Kosmic, and I realised that
the Amiga didn't really have anything like this. And I was getting
really annoyed cos quite a lot of my friends who I thought were really
talented (Dreamfish, TheFoxII, etc..) just weren't getting their tunes
spread. So I decided to set up Mono. And the nicest thing about it is
that we musicians don't have to rely on slow coders or lazy graphics
artists.. we can just release the tunes. :)

? Well i really like nearly all the mono releases so far..
    What is your personal Top5?

! Nasty question.. umm, "Theme" and "StreetJazz" by Mortimer Twang,
"Parallel" by Substance, "Indigo" by Basehead (multichannel), and
"Sunrise Technology" by Dreamfish. maybe. well, that's my top 5 at the
    moment. :)

? Are you a Bjork Lover as Iso is? (I hope that ISO isn't that fanatic as
the maniac fan i`ve seen on tv who killed himself for love =)

! Hehe, no, i think Iso is mad, but not _that_ mad. I do like Bjork, and I
like a lot of the people she's collaborated with.. her tunes are
emotional but electronic, which is pretty rare.

? Which are your favourite musicstyles???

! Everything.

? Many progressive musicians luv Sir Richard D. James aka Aphex Twin.
I think you`re a fan of him,too.. but why are you loving his tunes?

! Well, he's just very original, I guess. and not afraid to be adventurous.
in fact, one of the most exciting things about him is that he doesn't
    give a fuck. :)

? Do you think that Yolk&Legend/CNCD do well in releasing similar tunes
like Aphex Twin. And is it only distortion that counts in this tunes?

! Yolk+Legend are pretty influenced by Aphex, but by plenty of other stuff
too, I'm sure.. and I think it's important to listen to the tune, not
think about the distortion in it.. I guess it's just that we're not used
    to distortion in MODs.

? Do you think that Mono became too commercial at the moment?

! Umm, I'm never sure.. I know some people complained about that. Well,
it's not as if we're selling anything. :) I guess Mono is just for fun,
so it really can't be that commercial, even if I do try to publicise
Mono a bit too much sometimes.

? One of the best thinks i like concerning Mono is the number of releases.
One can find nearly every week a new Mono release and this is what i
call productivity! Why is there so much motivation in Mono??

! Hmm, well it's simply that it's very easy for me to release Mono tunes
(all I need to do is type up the info-file and email it off to all the
dist-sites, etc..), and the Mono musicians really like making tunes -
most importantly, most of the Mono musicians never used to get their
stuff spread at all, so I have lots and LOTS of unreleased stuff from
them. So I can pick the best stuff - one of the most important things
about Mono is quality control, I think.

? Do you think that multichannel musicians aren't that innovative or maybe
they are just too stupid to get it started? I think more channels does
not have the result of automatically increasing quality of the module
    itself.

! Well, Mono is going down very well with lots of PC owners, so I guess
that shows we can kinda 'compete'. The thing that worries me the most
about PC musicians is that they're often very 'purist' in a silly way -
they complain about breakbeats, drum loops, samples that are 'too long'.
Bleh, as if that matters? Having said that, there are quite a few VERY
talented PC musicians.. infact, there's lots of them!

? There are many Drum & Bass tunes if you watch the recent releases, why
is Drum & Bass so popular by progressive amiga musicians???

! Well, drum and bass is easy and fun to do with MODs, and it's damn
    catchy. enough said? :)

? Ok. Enough said about Mono ... what are your future plans?
    I don't hope that you`ll sell your Amiga... :) ?

! Nono, I'll keep with the Amiga scene, although I may do some multichannel
tunes, and I want to do some MIDI stuff too. Otherwise, I just want to
keep happy, doing stuff I enjoy.

? Do you think that the amount of groups leaving the amiga scene, have a
negative reaction on the rest of the scene, and in particular yourself?

! Actually, I think the scene is kinda better nowadays, because all those
people complaining about the scene being bad left - but yes, there's not
as much new talent nowadays, which is a shame. everything's got a lot
smaller. but I still enjoy the scene, lots.

? What is the worst thing you've heard people say about you?

! I don't know. :)

? Is it true that Supernao loves Facet????

! Umm, nn... yyy... nnn... no comment.

? I must leave it at this, if there is anything you would like to say,
    then this is your chance..

! Just keep having fun, stay cool, and be happy. thanks for reading.

? Hollywood, thx for this interview...
