THE SOUTH SEALAND 1995

Whilst the whole scene population was preparing itself to attack Holland, the Danish scene proudly came up with it's own summer event; The second instalment of The South Sealand Party. The SS 1995 was, just like the year before, held at the Iselinge Skolen, a small school situated in the town of Vordingborg, Denmark.

The official opening was scheduled for Friday, the 7th of July at 10:00, but in less than 1 hour, the main hall was already full with visitors. ROM counted 300 sceners; that is, 100 more than the previous year. The school offered room for more than 500 people, so for once, there were no foreseeable over-population problems.

The organisers made sure that enough showers and toilets were available for everyone, and they seem to have managed the hygienic part of the event, in a good way.

A quiet sleeping room, situated far away from the noise of the main hall, was available for all tired sceners. But who wants to sleep on a scene party, especially when many made a long trip or even crossed the country, just to be there? Surely Webster of Passion, who has been reported to have slept for 20 long hours in a row!

The usual food kiosks, hardware stands and a laserdisc room put the organisational effort behind this party, together with the top scene events of today. The organisers were kind enough to make sure that a spacious parking space was available at all times.

Even though the SS can be considered as the biggest non-profit-making event in Denmark, the usual party facilities did not miss; A big screen and a superb sound equipment helped to keep up the infamous South Sealand partying atmosphere!

Passion, Balance, Polka Brothers, Subacid, Impact and the most respected Danish groups were well represented; still, the organizers had some minor problems with the lack of presented productions. Fortunately enough, the main intro and demo competitions were not cancelled, even though they were poorly attended.

DEMO COMPETITION

1. Pyt by Subacid
2. GFB Megademo
3. Amazed by Vanity
4. Giga Productions
5. Face by Mentrax

Only the above 5 demos were presented for the competition. Many might remember last year's winner, the Love demo from Virtual Dreams. Unfortunately none of the presented productions seemed to have reached Love's high standards (neither last year's second placement, Gevalia), especially with the incompatibility problems of the Subacid presentation. It was quite uncomfortable to hear many party attenders whispering this fact after the demo competition was over.

64K INTRO COMPETITION

1. Herb by Polka Brothers
2. Cold Fire by Impact DK
3. Fire Power by Tricktrax
4. FFFF by Focus Design

Even though only 4 intros were presented for this competition, the German Polka heroes saved the day, by giving us a nice contribution, full of well coded effects, which looks quite similar to the Artwork demo, Greenday... only this time, coders Argon and Crash have fit all their bits and bytes in 64k!

GRAPHICS COMPETITION

1. CyboLove by RWO of Balance
2. TP5 by The Party 5 Crew
3. Under Control by Fiver of Artwork
4. Barbarian by Dr. Zulu of Giga Prods

26 pictures were shown on the big screen. Smelling the absence of Devilstar (who attended the SIH 1995), Danish pixel star, RWO, took the first prize home, with a strange picture depicting a male and female cyborgs! Even though the picture has a quite original motif, it looks like RWO has simply put two unmatching faces together, and mixed everything with his usual dithering technique! The Party 5 organisers saw it fit to peruse their popularity, and grasped a maybe-undeserving second place, leaving an angry Fiver with empty hands!
MUSIC COMPETITION

2. Monoliner by Motion of Balance
3. Beat Phobia by POW of Iris
4. Strictly Jungle by Relief of The Lowlifes
5. Skubidubab by Tricktrax

33 techno-inspiring modules made it to the finals; The poor audience had to withstand 2 whole hours of Amiga techno imitations!

As promised in the invitation, the organisers has seen it fit to withhold some surprise competitions;

FAST GRAPHICS COMPETITION FAST MUSIC COMPETITION
------------------------- ----------------------

1. Muuhko by Sanctum of Iris 1. Tricktrax
2. The Farm by Kollaps of Focus Design 2. Unison of Impact
3. Niels Anker For President by Coma of Balance 3. Trip of Depth

Whilst the Danish Polka Brothers kept a rather low profile at this event, Danish personality Tricktrax has proved to be the hero of the day. He came third with his 64K intro, Fire Power, 5th in the main music competition and first in the fast music contest! If this is just a coincidence, derived from the lack of competitors or not, it is a fact that this scener can become someone in the scene of tomorrow, even though his overall skills have to be refined.

With only 300 visitors and a handful of average productions, many might think that the SS is no big scene party (like the one in Herning) after all. Wrong! The SS is an event, mainly aimed at the benefits of the Danish scene. It's the superb party atmosphere and not the big prizes and commercialism, that make it THE preferred event of all Danish sceners! The organisers are willing to continue the South Sealand tradition, year after year, even though a new locality (still in Vordingborg) will have to be found for the 1996 summer edition!
